China is ready to put U.S. technology companies such as Apple, (AAPL), Cisco Systems (CSCO), and Qualcomm (QCOM) on its “unreliable entity list.” That would likely result in investigations and economic restrictions on those U.S. companies, according to the Global Times. Â The Global Times, while not an official publication of the Communist Party of China, is published by the People’s Daily, which is itself the official newspaper of the Communist Party.
The move by China, the Global Times reports, would be in retaliation for an action today by the U.S. Department of Commerce to amend an export rule to target Huawei Technologies’ acquisition of semiconductors that are the direct product of certain U.S. software and technology. That would require companies using U.S. chipmaking equipment to obtain a U.S. license before supplying chips to Huawei.
