Initial claims for unemployment set a more than 50-year low last week. The Labor Department reported initial jobless claims, for the week ended March 19, fell to 187,000 versus an expected 210,000 and a revised 215,000 for the prior week.

Continuing claims, for the week ended March 12, fell to 1.35 million versus an expected 1.4 million and a revised 1.417 million for prior week

At 187,000, new jobless claims reached the lowest level since September 1969. Continuing claims fell to lowest level since January 1970.
