Penn Virginia Resource Partners (PVR) makes the bulk of its revenue (84% in 2008) from coal. The company leases out its coal resources to operators that Penn Virginia a royalty. The company gets another revenue stream from providing coal preparation and transportation services to its lessees. They also operate coal handling facilities through a partnership with Massey Energy (MEE) that serves third-party coal operators. As of the end of 2008 Penn Virginia Resources owned or controlled approximately 827 million tons of proven and probable coal reserves, largely in central and northern Appalachia. The yield as of October 14 was 10.2%.
