Sell Suburban Propane (SPH)

I’ve got to sell something out of the Dividend Income portfolio today to make room for my buy of Telkom Indonesia. After Suburban Propane (SPH) announced a 34 cent a share earnings miss on February 4 the choice is pretty easy.

Revenues, which fell 17% from the December quarter of 2008, also missed analyst projections. By volume propane sales fell 9%. Some of that was due to warmer than average weather but the biggest part of the decline came in the non-residential sector where the slow economy ate into volumes.

I added this stock to the Dividend Income portfolio on December 9, 2008 at a price of $28.61. I’m selling today at $44.95 for a gain in price of 57.11%. With dividends the total return in a little more than a year came to 71%. (That’s what getting the timing on 60% plus rally that began in March 2009 even vaguely right (just luck, I’d be the first to admit in this case) will do for returns.

    Jim
Why dont you look north of the border for dividend plays
    many pay 8% or better

I’m not certain I understand why you would want to switch one stock with another that pays less than half the dividend. Why not keep both for now? Was the miss for SPH that bad?

  • shavdog on 13 February 2010

The miss on sph was that bad…..

    Jim,

How can one benefit from nuclear power initiative? I was always arguing that this is by far the best America can do to be energy independent AND to keep jobs in the US (solar energy and wind energy outsource those jobs to China). It seems like, finally, Obama is listening to what some smart republicans were saying long time ago.

However, who is the likely beneficiary of a revised nuclear energy policy?

“Platts, in a report, said that China five largest steelmakers proposed to one of the world’s top three suppliers that they would pay a provisional 40% more for contract iron ore than a year ago. The Platts report said that an agreement may have been reached.

As per report “Miners are reportedly nearing a deal for a 40% provisional price hike in the 2010-2011 talks.”

Any chance we’ll see an uptick to the stock price due to an unusually cold winter? Is this a git-while-the-gittin-is-good sell or ditching an underperformer to fit something else in?
