We should include our friend Monsanto as part of the solution to the water problem. From their 2009 press releases.

Corn Yield Drought 1 Tolerant (Drought-tolerant Corn)
Phase: 3 to 4
In the fourth-annual R&D pipeline update, the company’s drought-tolerant corn – the first-ever biotech crop with that trait – moved into Phase 4, the last phase before commercialization. This phase includes development and testing of best trait and germplasm combinations for commercial launch.

Hi!

Mr. Jubak mentioned valuations.

I've been looking at the numbers in the most recent S&P Stock Report for TTC, a stock which I hold and like.

The average High-PE for 1999-2008 comes out 16.5. The average Low-PE for those years is 10.8. (If we take the last 5 years instead of the last 10, the numbers are somewhat higher, i.e., somewhat more encouraging.) The current TTM PE is given as 17.1 and the est. 2009 PE is 23.4.

Taking into account that we don't really know when TTC will recover from the housing slump, that we don't really know how the luxury businesses are going to recover - golf, anyone? - and that noone will be really shocked by a market pullback in the near future, it's hard for me to be enthusiastic about TTC's price right now.

Comments, anyone?

Thanks.

Readers concerned about making water more widely available may want to look at CFWAX, the Calvert Water Fund: "Water is a human right. We believe that all of us have a right to clean water. Calvert strives to invest only in companies that support this objective."

Jim,

The issue of water is pure political. Somehow people think it is OK to charge extra $$$ for oil, but it is not OK to put a market-driven price tag on water. If fresh water becomes commodity, the problem with will be solved relatively easy. Technology is there to make drinking water from a sea water, but since there is no real price (unless you sell it as a bottled water), nobody is willing to push this technology to the open market.
