If GM and Ford aren't even on the list of places that people visit when they're thinking about buyhing a car,then they're dead. BTW, my favorite book about donuts is a picture book for kids "Arnie the donut" by Laurie Keller. At the end of the book Arnie has to figure out a new career to replace being eaten. you only get one, New donuts are essential though to get people into the showrooms. Speeding up the development time for new models won't help that issue. My bet is that most, if not all American car builders will end up merging with foreign companies.
