you only get one, New donuts are essential though to get people into the showrooms. If GM and Ford aren't even on the list of places that people visit when they're thinking about buyhing a car, then they're dead.
BTW, my favorite book about donuts is a picture book for kids "Arnie the donut" by Laurie Keller. At the end of the book Arnie has to figure out a new career to replace being eaten.

Jim - some other considerations -

1) Residual value - Why buy a GM, Ford, or Chrysler when in general the resale or trade-in values will be lower particularly when compared to similar models from Japanese and European automakers? (Even as a % of original purchase price, not just absolute dollars). How can they fix that?

2) New donuts aren't always better. Build a great, reliable power train platform and people will notice. Here's an example - The Jeep straight 6 , lot's of staying power in the market because it was good. It was replaced by the 3.7L V6 which is a disappointment, and now I've read they'll come out with yet another V6 in model year 2011. New donuts don't always taste good!

This may sound a little out there, but in my opinion the US needs a new auto manufacturer. Not a new division of one of the big three, an all new company. Now's the time! Do it right and the future will be there's.

Overall product quality is important, and it seems that American car companies lost that battle long ago. Speeding up the development time for new models won't help that issue. My bet is that most, if not all American car builders will end up merging with foreign companies. I certainly don't see any long term investment possibilities here.
